Patience Ross 1.png

In this grave are four siblings. They all died as teenagers/young adults so there is limited information about their life.

The first born child is Patience. She is the daughter of Ann Ross and Ann’s first husband Antony Waller. Patience was baptised in 1796 in Skipton. Following Anthony’s death in 1897 Ann went on to marry John Ross, a wine and spirit merchant from Halifax in 1800. They had seven more children; three of whom are buried along with Patience.

Margaret was born in 1800 and baptised on the 19th April 1800 at Square Chapel.  She married Benjamin Clark, a Malster from Armley in Leeds. A Malster produced malt for brewing.

They married on the 25th July 1822 at Halifax Parish Church. Margaret died just over a year later on the 17th November 1823 aged 23. Her death notice in the Leeds Intelligencer read “Same day, at her father’s, Mr John Ross, spirit merchant, Halifax age 22, Mrs Clark, wife of Mr Clark, Maltster of Armley near this town”

Ann was born 2nd August and baptised 18th Sept 1804 at Square Chapel. She died at age 13 on the 21st June 1817.

John was the eldest son. He was born 30th Nov 1802 and baptised 21st Dec 1802 at Square Chapel. He was also a wine and spirit merchant, probably working with his father. In July 1825 he married Theodosia Knight of Horton, near Bradford. They had a child together, also called John in May 1826. John Snr. died shortly after his son’s birth. John Snr. died on 9th May 1826 and his son John Jnr. was baptised just three days later in Bradford.
