John Ross was born around 1768. He lived and conducted his business as a wine and spirit merchant from North Parade in Halifax.
He appears to have been a successful businessman. After his death the business and property was advertised. A notice in the Leeds Mercury described it as a “very reputable and old established concern” and the property as “a general messuage furnished with all requisite fixtures, an excellent warehouse with extensive vaults” as well as stabling, a barn, a close of land and two cottages.
