Thomas and Elizabeth Senior.PNG

Thomas Senior was born in 1755. In 1791 he married Elizabeth Thomas at Halifax Parish Church.

His occupation was Innkeeper. Thomas was 36 and Elizabeth 42 years old. She was a spinster.

Thomas and Elizabeth had a daughter Harriett who was born on 21st June 1794 and baptised on 20th July at Square Chapel. Unusually for the time, Elizabeth would have been approximately 45 when she gave birth to Harriet who appears to have been her only child. Elizabeth died just a few years later in 1802, leaving 8 year old Harriet.

Between 1822 and 1829 and possibly up to 1834 Thomas was the Inn Keeper at the Three Pigeons in Halifax.

Harriet Senior married David Ramsden at Halifax Parish Church on 25 December 1820. David was 27 years old and referred to as a ‘gentleman’. Harriet was 26 years old.

David and Harriet had four children :

John Ramsden - born 1828

Harriet Ramsden - born 1829

Mary Ann Ramsden - born 1831

Hannah Ramsden - born 1833

Sadly, only John survived into adulthood. The children’s baptism records show David as being a corn dealer.

It appears that Innkeeper was a family occupation. Harriet Ramsden is recorded in the 1851 Census as a 57 year old Innkeeper in Northowram. She is living at Lower Bowling Dyke, with her are her son John, who is a 23 year old corn miller, and a young lady by the name of Harriet Stringer, who is a 21 year old house servant. It is probable that Harriet was employed for Inn duties.

There is an interesting newspaper article from 1853 involving the theft of a bootle jack from The Woodcock Beerhouse which was owned by Harriet Ramsden. A bootle jack was an automated food heating implement, used to heat food in front of an open fire.

n the 1861 Census, Harriet’s recorded as a Retired Landlady (of Inn). John has moved on, but Harriet Stringer is still living with Harriet as a servant. Harriet died in 1863 aged 69 years. She was buried with her husband and father. Her three infant children were buried with her mother.
