John Glendinning was a wine and spirit merchant, along with his brother Alexander Glendinning. John and Alexander moved to Halifax around 1780. John and Alexander bought Gibraltar farm in 1799 plus an additional 4 closes (fields) for a total of around £1000 and sold it all in 1802 for £1365. John is recorded as paying ‘Poor Relief’, a tax on property owners.

Moore's map of 1797 and accompanying field book shows that field number 307 is owned by Mr Glendinning. Calderdale Libraries Map Collection.

John Glendinning married Elizabeth Buck in Ripley, North Yorkshire on 27th October 1788.

John and Elizabeth had four children who died (three before reaching adulthood) and are buried with them:

Agnes died 22 May 1795 (aged 5 years, 6 months & 17  days)

John [1792-11th April 1812] died aged 20 years

Elizabeth died 6 Mar 1802 (aged 7 years & 9 months)

Mariah [1799-21st November 1814] died aged 15 years

John Glendinning (Senior) died in 1808 aged 62. Elizabeth Glendinning died in 1814 aged 57.

John (Senior) appears to have been in partnership with two liquor merchants aside from his brother Alexander, as there is a record of a dissolved partnership between John Glendinning, James McKenzie and Welbury Kendall of Halifax, Yorkshire - Brandy Merchants. The partnership was dissolved on 12th September 1805.

John (Senior) had a wine and spirit store of many years and lived in the adjoining house on King Cross Street. After John’s death in 1808, Elizabeth and their children continued to live at King Cross Street/Lane until a fire on the 8th of April 1810 left it uninhabitable. In a notice asking for charity for the widow Elizabeth and her children, they are described as a “distressed and respectable family suffering from no demerit or misconduct of its own”. This suggests that they were not poor until the fire, and therefore seen as deserving of support in their time of need.

John and Elizabeth also had another surviving daughter named Agnes, born on 26th June 1796, baptised on 28th July at Square Chapel.

Agnes married William Fawcett Bolland on 27th Nov 1816 in York. Agnes and William had several children and lived in Liverpool. Their son, John Glendinning Bolland, was baptised at Liverpool St John in 1838.

In 1841 Agnes Bolland was living on Dale Street in Liverpool. William appears to have died by this time and she has three children living with her. William (Junior) aged 20, ‘Royer’ (Roger?) aged 16 and Agnes aged 10.

In 1851 she is living with her daughter Agnes and a son ‘Francet’ (Fawcett?) aged 34.

In 1861, Agnes is living with her daughter Agnes and son-in-law William Fairclough. Agnes Bolland died in 1868 aged 72 and is buried at St Mary’s, Merseyside.
