This grave contains several members of the Foxall family – siblings Ann, Sarah Ann, William Henry and Mary, their mother Sarah and their half brother Levi.

Thomas Foxall was born in Shifnall, Shropshire. Later he married Sarah, although we can find no record of this marriage. Their first child was William Henry Foxall, born around 1820. I can find no record of his birth or baptism. Did they marry elsewhere and move to Halifax with their young child? The first record we can find for this family in Halifax is the birth of Thomas Foxall in 1821, Thomas, the father, is a Gas Engineer and the child is baptised at the Square Chapel, Halifax. John is born in 1823, Frederick in 1825, Sarah Ann in 1827 (but sadly dies 11 months later), James is born in 1829.

A Trade Directory from 1830 records Foxall, Thomas as Superintendent of the Gas Works, Bank Bottom. Their child, Mary, was born in 1831. They had another child, David in 1833, but there are no records of his birth or baptism. Sadly, their child William Henry Foxall, aged 16, died in 1836. Sarah Foxall, Thomas’ wife, died 4 February 1837, aged 40. Sarah and the children were buried at Square Independent Chapel, Halifax in February 1837, and in June of the same year their 12 year old son Frederick also died. 1837 was an eventful year as Thomas remarried just 8 months after Sarah’s death in October 1837 to Mary. Mary was born in Sowerby and was the widow of Mr Lister. She came with her daughter Fanny Lister who was aged about 5 at the time. During this year of upheaval, Thomas Foxall of Southowram is listed as living at Gas Works House, listed also as a Proprietor of Gas Works (alongside Christopher Rawson).

Thomas Foxall and his second wife Mary have their first child together, William Henry in 1838, followed by Levi Walton Foxall (named after Mary’s brother) in 1839. Sadly, Levi died just 7 months later.By 1841 and the first Census, Thomas and Mary are living at Hawkins Cottage, Southowram, and he, aged  45, is Manager of Gas Works. They are living with John, James, Mary Foxall, Fanny, David, William and a servant. Thomas and Mary have a daughter, Ann in 1842 who died just 9 months later. Sadly, in 1844, they also faced the death of 13 year old Mary Foxall, who was the last one to be buried in the family plot at Square Chapel. The same year, 15 year old James Foxall died. The year after, they had a daughter, Sarah, in 1845.Thomas Foxall (Gas Engineer) is mentioned in a newspaper article from 1847 at the Shipley Gas Light Bill preliminary enquiry. “Mr Thomas Foxall, of Halifax, gas engineer, produced and explained various plans and sections relating to the proposed works” …” Mr Foxall was severely examined to show the capability of the proposed works to supply both the present and future requirements of the district”.

Thomas Foxall appears in the York Heald in 1851 as an Insolvent Debtor. Under the heading Insolvent Debtors Court, York Castle, Monday, March 24. “Unopposed Cases – Thomas Foxall, Elland, Halifax, gas engineer and contractor”

1851 Census Thomas Foxall Civil Engineer. Living at Gas House, Elland cum Greetland, with Mary and four children. Thomas Foxall appears in Electoral Registers for 1855 and is still living at Gas Works, Elland.

1861 Census Thomas Foxall (Gas Engineer) and Mary Foxall are visiting Pontefract at the time of the census. His job is given as Gas Engineer. Thomas Foxall died, age 76, in Bradford. The death notice for him in the local paper said he died in Cleckheaton. His probate record showed he left effects of under £100 and lived in Cleckheaton, leaving his wife Mary as sole Executrix. Mary Foxall lived with her youngest daughter in Sowerby Bridge until her death in 1880.

It seems most of Thomas Foxall's male children went on to be gas engineers or gas mechanics. His youngest son, mechanic, lived in Bradford with his family. David Foxall, Gas Engineer and later Gas Inspector, North Eastern Railway Company, lived in Leeds with his family. William Henry Foxall, a Gas Fitter, lived in Newcastle with his family, sadly drowned in 1868 in a boating mishap in Liverpool.
